Care-a-Vanners 04/28/2012

They arrived last Sunday and brought with them some wonderful weather.  Care-a-Vanners are retired youthful adults who travel the country working on Habitat projects. They came to Columbus this week and worked on four homes.  They are the most wonderful workers I have ever had the pleasure of working with.  They work hard, they enjoy every moment, and they get stuff done. I have already decided that CAHFH will host them twice a year for two weeks at a time. Thank you to the Burketts for being the leaders and to all the Care-a-Vanners for choosing to spend your time in Columbus. See you next time and I promise cool t-shirts!

Why Habitat? 04/21/2012

I have spent the past three days at a HFH conference in Auburn [you know how that pained me!] and I learned a lot and met many whose passion is Habitat.  After we disbanded I went to Shelby Street to check on the work there.  Here is what I saw -   40 or more OCS soldiers in full uniform laying sod, spreading soil and planting trees for three homes.  A few minutes after I arrived the Perez children ran to greet me and we took the keys and looked around inside.  They are bursting with pride - they will have their own rooms in less than two weeks.  They will have a safe place to live. They will have a yard to play in - see the photo. It tells the story better than any words I write:

Busy April! 04/10/2012

This is typically the time of year when we are finishing projects and re-grouping. Not this year.  Two more slabs will be poured this month - State Farm and Women Build.  State Farm is sponsoring our first two-story home and Lowe's is sponsoring the Women Build.  Today I met the neighbors on 39th Street where these homes will be built.  They are polite and friendly and eager for us to get started. I will say again, Habitat makes a difference in Columbus.

This has been a wonderful week for Habitat. Three homes almost dried in by Ashland University, University of Pittsburgh and Columbus State University.  For those who think there is lots wrong with our world - drive by Cusseta Road and Mason Street and see what is right!  Over 100 college students working all day long making homeownership a reality for some partner families.  Next week, Washington College adds the fourth home.  When you have doubts about our youth, our future and our ability to be concerned for others above self - stop at a Habitat build site.  Powerful stuff.

Happy New Year 01/05/2012

2012 ushers in nineteen new partner families.  They are all eager to begin their sweat equity and earn their first home.  We have met with all the families and are delighted to realize that over 60 people will have a decent place to live this year thanks to the Habitat model.  The first partner family work day is Saturday at Shelby Street.  It promises to be fun and busy!

Our final numbers are in!   150 students during week one and 81 students during week two!  Welcome to Columbus,  The first week is co-hosted by Columbus State University and the second week is co-hosted by Aflac.  Columbus is a great place to live, work and raise a family.  We are so blessed to have generous citizens, welcoming organizations and supporting businesses and contractors.  Cannot wait!!!!

Now we are all together and I could not be happier!  Our office space is fabulous - thank you Jim and Cynthia  for making it happen!  What could be more fun than walking into the store for a picture hook or just asking Chance for a hammer?  The space is just wonderful. Come and see what we have done!

We have a press conference Tuesday @ 10 at Pou Street to announce the sale. Mayor Tomlinson will be present to give remarks. Thank you Mayor and all who are making a difference in our town.
