Our History:

Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. Columbus Area Habitat works in partnership with people in need to improve the conditions in which they live. Habitat challenges people of compassion to provide initial capital - through gifts, donations and grants - to build or renovate simple, decent, affordable homes for the inadequately sheltered. Houses are sold at no profit, with no-interest mortgages repaid over a twenty year period. House payments are used to continue to build more houses in Columbus. The Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity affiliate is governed by a local board of directors which sets up a nondiscriminatory family selection process and supervises the construction of homes. Habitat relies heavily on volunteers for construction and on community foundations and individuals for financial support. In seeking to build up both the tangible and the spiritual aspects of our community, Habitat proclaims the love of Christ in word and deed and aims always to glorify God. The Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity affiliate was incorporated on December 10, 1984, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation to "witness to and implement the gospel of Jesus Christ in Georgia by working with economically disadvantaged people to help them create a better human habitat in which to live and work."

Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity creates partnerships to construct and sell housing for those in need; building in communities that will be
strengthened by these volunteer efforts. Columbus Area Habitat for Humanity also seeks to raise awareness of critical housing issues; motivated by the
belief that everyone should have, at least, a simple decent house in which to live.
